How you specify the instance name for TCP/IP vs Named Pipes isn't any different. You do it the same regardless of the communication protocol being used. The "default" instance is always empty/null. Named instances require that the instance name be filled out in the " SQL Server Instance" field highlighted below. It may be firewall, router access control lists, SQL permissions, or problems with user account permissions.
